Family: Oleaceae, Genus: Syringa

Description:

Syringa vulgaris 'Royalty' is a type of lilac known for its large, fragrant blooms that appear later in the summer compared to other varieties. It features dark purple buds that open into lavender flowers, complemented by thick, dark green leaves. This plant is notable for its resistance to disease and deer, as well as its heat tolerance, thriving in USDA zones 3-8. With an upright growth habit, it can reach a mature height of 8-10 feet and a width of 6-8 feet. Developed in the 1920s by Isabella Preston in Canada, it requires full sun and well-drained soil. Pruning should be done immediately after flowering to maintain its shape and health. It grows at a medium rate of 1-2 feet per year, making it a robust addition to gardens in suitable climates.
