Furcraea foetida

Family: Asparagaceae, Genus: Furcraea

Description:

Furcraea foetida, commonly known as Mauritius hemp, is a striking evergreen perennial subshrub native to the Caribbean and northern South America. It features sword-shaped leaves that can grow up to 5 feet long, sometimes edged with hooked spines. The plant is notable for its towering inflorescence, which can reach up to 25 feet, bearing greenish to creamy white, strongly scented flowers. After flowering, the plant's blooming section dies, but new growth emerges from its roots and rhizomes. Mauritius hemp is cultivated for its natural fiber, similar to sisal, and as an ornamental plant. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil. The plant is hardy in USDA zones 9a to 11 and can tolerate temperatures as low as 25°F. Its slow growth rate and unique appearance make it a fascinating addition to gardens in suitable climates.
