Description:
The Metasequoia glyptostroboides, also known as the dawn redwood, is a fast-growing, deciduous conifer with feathery, needle-like foliage. Its leaves transition from light green in spring to rich green in summer, and fiery russet in fall. This 'living fossil' was rediscovered in China in the mid-20th century and can reach heights of 70 to 100 feet, with some specimens growing even taller. It thrives in damp soils and requires full sun, making it suitable for USDA hardiness zones 4 to 8. Despite being endangered in the wild due to deforestation, it is widely planted in arboreta and gardens worldwide. The tree is notable for its unique trunk structure, which forms a distinctive 'armpit' under each branch, and its bark that exfoliates in ribbon-like strips.
