Sciadopitys verticillata

Family: Sciadopityaceae, Genus: Sciadopitys

Description:

Sciadopitys verticillata, known as the Japanese umbrella pine, is a unique conifer with glossy dark green foliage and a slow-growing pyramidal shape. It is endemic to Japan and is the only living member of its family, making it a living fossil. This evergreen tree can grow up to 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide in ten years, eventually reaching heights of 50 to 90 feet. Its brown main shoots are adorned with whorls of green cladodes, and it produces cones that mature over 18 months. The tree is well-suited for rock gardens and as a standalone specimen. It has historical significance as a possible primary producer of Baltic amber and is a symbol for the Akishino branch of the Japanese Imperial Family. The Japanese umbrella pine was introduced to the UK in 1860 and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit for its garden appeal.
