Description:
Bulbophyllum frostii is a unique orchid species known for its large, pendulous flowers and unpleasant scent that mimics carrion to attract fly pollinators. This epiphytic orchid thrives in the evergreen seasonal lowland rainforests of Vietnam, Thailand, and the Malay peninsula, and has recently been found in Yunnan, China. It grows at elevations around 4,900 feet and features green to purple pseudobulbs with a single dark green, oblong-elliptic leaf per pseudobulb. The flowers, which can be variable with some having fused sepals, bloom in small clusters from the base of the pseudobulb. This orchid prefers cool to warm temperatures between 64 and 75°F and requires high humidity and filtered light. It is a low-maintenance plant that does not shed its leaves in colder months, making it an interesting addition to any orchid collection.
