Sprekelia formosissima

Family: Amaryllidaceae, Genus: Sprekelia

Description:

Sprekelia formosissima, also known as the Aztec Lily, is a striking bulbous plant native to the rocky outcrops of Mexican mountains. It features large, solitary red flowers that bloom in early spring and sometimes again in the fall. The plant thrives in full sun and dry, well-drained soil, making it highly drought-tolerant. It is winter-hardy in USDA Zone 7b and warmer, and can be grown in containers to be overwintered frost-free. Its growth habit is similar to that of Hippeastrum, with a clump of strap-shaped leaves. The plant reaches a height of about 22 inches and is known for its spectacular blooms. Sprekelia formosissima is low maintenance and can be kept dormant during winter months. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens and xeriscaping due to its resilience and minimal water requirements.
