Helianthus verticillatus, known as the giant whorled sunflower, is a rare plant rediscovered in 1994 and a candidate for the Endangered Species list. It is found in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee, thriving in moist, alkaline prairie settings. This sunflower grows in clumps of 10-12 foot tall stalks with linear leaves, topped with yellow daisies in the fall.
