Description:
Podocarpus macrophyllus, also known as the Buddhist Pine, is a small to medium-sized evergreen conifer native to southern Japan and China. It can grow up to 65 feet tall and features strap-shaped leaves that are 2 to 5 inches long. The tree produces fleshy, berry-like cones that are consumed by birds. It is commonly found in forests and open areas from sea level to 3,300 feet. This species is the state tree of Chiba Prefecture in Japan and is popular in gardens for its ornamental value. The ripe cone arils are edible, though the seeds should not be consumed. Podocarpus macrophyllus is also valued for its use in traditional Japanese architecture and feng shui.
