Peltandra virginica

Family: Araceae, Genus: Peltandra

Description:

Peltandra virginica, commonly known as Green Arrow Arum, is a native perennial herb of the eastern United States, Quebec, Ontario, and Cuba. It features shiny green, arrowhead-shaped leaves and produces greenish-white flowers in late spring. The plant thrives in very moist soils or shallow water, making it ideal for bog gardens. Its rhizomes can tolerate low oxygen levels, and it is pollinated by chloropid flies. The plant can become invasive if introduced outside its native range. Historically, Native Americans used it as a food source after extensive cooking. It is also valued for sediment stabilization and as an ornamental plant.
